The Cold Hard Truth

Mankind, in the most natural of states, care only for themselves and surviving the world we live in. Take a baby for example. A baby's only cares are getting sufficient food, sleep, and being satisfied. Taking any of these necessities away would risk the life of the child and potentially threaten proper development. Taking away such vitality would be considered extremely unethical and crude. But what changes us from this adolescent state of wanting only what's best for us, into a more selfless, and in sense, ethical human being? But on another spectra, what keeps people from developing those compassionate emotions? Is the evil of the world corrupting the good? Or is the good overcoming the evil? In other words, is it human nature to feel such strong emotions like love and empathy, or is it in fighting off the natural man that we find the heart to be a generous human being.
In current headlines, newspaper articles, and other media updates, we constantly see the evil seeping through. School shootings, kidnappings, burglaries, break ins, bombings, homicides, bullying, - it's everywhere! It's confusing to consider the possibilities of this kind of behavior in our society. We would all like to believe that mankind is compassionate, loving, and incapable of such actions. But we know it's as real as ever. We'd love to believe that being a sympathetic person is second nature; Men tend to be kind to one another. But finding out the truth of this matter is the real challenge.
I'd love to believe man is naturally good, only corrupted by the evil of the world. Overcoming the evil is the true challenge of life. Those little moments when good conquers the evil are truly the precious moments in life.

  1. Brooke you are such a good writer! I am always drawn into your paper or written words. This post is something that gets you thinking. I too would like to believe that mankind is compassionate and loving, and i often wonder just how naive i am as a high school student who hasn't seen much of the world. but i agree that little, evil conquering moments are precious. I think people who can recognize that are people who can change the world, a little at a time. (:

  2. That’s pretty deep stuff. You make good points throughout this blog post. Like you, I would like to believe that mankind is naturally good and that it becomes corrupted through things in the world that are evil. I think that on the news, we are bombarded with things that happen such as crimes and other negative things like that, and I think that we should be aware of things that happen that are bad. However, I think there are also many people out there doing good things that might receive much less publicity.I think that this blog post is pretty good food for thought. Thanks for posting!

  3. Brooke you are absolutely right. There is far too much evil in the world today, but that is what makes love so important. If we can be selfless for the ones that we love we can start to beat back the evil. We should try to focus on the good… the light that breaks up the dark. It is the only way to keep hope alive. If we simply give up on humanity we will have nothing left, and it will truly be the end of the world. Love is what pushes us on. It is what keeps us fighting. We have to believe in the good in the world, or risk falling into evil.
